What Is Sleep Apnea?
Sleep apnea occurs when someone stops breathing at night because they choke on their own tongue or jaw collapsing in on their airway. Sleep apnea episodes can happen just few times or many times at night. It can be for a short period or as much as 120 seconds. Everyones sleep apnea is unique but the bottom line is that this condition may be serious and needs to be investigated.
This gasping awake or stopping breathing at night is often accompanied by loud snoring and an excessive level of sleepiness during the day.
The result is never feeling rested and having low energy and daily fatigue. The more severe the sleep apnea, the greater the risk of coronary artery disease, heart attacks, heart failure and strokes. Obstructive sleep apnea increases the risk of abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias), which can lower blood pressure.
